Over at Kaviar and Kind in West Hollywood, Angelina Jolie’s longtime stylist, Jennifer Rade, hosted a trunk show for new jewelry designer Jennifer Herwitt’s dazzling diamond collections, J.Herwitt. Herwitt, a former set decorator known mostly for her work on CSI, met Rade when they collaborated on some Marilyn Manson videos. Herwitt’s new line of jewelry, exclusive to Kaviar and Kind and her own Web site, is a sparkly homage to creepy crawlers: it’s all insects. Ants chasing diamond crumbs, spiders spun on a necklace to look like they’re crawling around the neck: it all sounds a bit goth, but the pieces are actually delicate, light, fun—and beautiful. “I’m a closet entomologist,” laughed Herwitt, covered in three diamond insects pendants in the form of a dragonfly, butterfly, and spider. “I’ve been fascinated by bugs since I was a kid.” There are also seahorse necklaces with diamonds that she created because, as she puts it, “seahorses mate for life.” Celebrities have already gone buggy for Herwitt's line: Jessica Alba’s worn a spider pendant, and Rade has even put them on another client, Pink—but not Jolie yet, as they seem rather inappropriate to wear to her recent red carpet appearances promoting A Mighty Heart, in which she plays the wife of slain journalist Daniel Perl. Rade, decked out in super-skinny jeans by Rag & Bone, fell in love with the jewelry because “it’s as simple and as complicated as nature, which I love.” Getting kudos on the yellow Ungaro couture gown Jolie wore at the Cannes Film Festival, Rade laughed, “That was a risky color for us, but it worked out,” in between hugs from Marg Helgenberger and Luke Wilson. “The other night, Angelina wore a $26 black velvet dress we found at Wasteland. It’s not how much it costs, baby, it’s how ya put it together!” MERLE GINSBERG
